Assembled Rocket

Custom Fincan and Aluminum Boattail / Aft Closure

This all-aluminum and carbon fibre rocket is the creation of Jeff Jakob. Jeff is a rocket craftsman extrodinaire, all his works are something to see and own.

See assembly pictorial here

The 38 Special includes:

  • 38mm Nose Cone
  • Carbon Fibre Recovery Section
  • Forward Nitrous tank closure/recovery section coupler/retention point
  • Aft Tank Closure/Motor Head End with Injector
  • Motor Section
  • Aft Motor Closure/Boattail
  • Precut G10 Fins
  • Filament Wound Fincan
  • Fincan Forward Stop
Some fabrication is necessary on the part of the rocketeer. The nosecone must be modified to accept your electronics - we recommend the Gwiz LC Deluxe for this task, it's a proven performer and fits perfect in the 38mm nosecone.

The rocketeer must also supply their choice of bridle materials and attachment points. We leave this up to the builder which method best suits their tastes.

The payload section is carbon fiber to reduce weight, the fins are .090 G10, the fincan is filament wound fiberglass. You can either finish the fins in carbon fibre for that high tech look and added rigidity or simply install 2 or 3 layers of glass cloth. Step by step instructions are included so you can fabricate a stout assembly in a couple of hours.

Due to the extreme altitudes this rocket is capable of achieving and to allow the rocketeer more flexibility and options the choice of rail buttons, launch lug, or tower launching is left open. To get the best performance from this fabulous piece of flash we recommend a tower launch system. Plans for a simple tower capable of launching this rocket will be here soon.

The fuel grain is PVC, the nozzle is phenolic and graphite. The boattail not only reduces drag but also acts as the aft motor closure. The total weight of the rocket without nitrous, fuel grain, or recovery is 3.4 pounds, it stands 73" tall, and generates 225 pounds of initial thrust for .25 seconds, drops to 120 pounds of thrust and tapers off for the 2.5 second duration of burn as tank pressure decreases resulting in approximately 250 pound/seconds of thrust.

The 38 Special uses one .25" injector, a 14.25" motor section, and a graphite/phenolic nozzle with a .5" diameter. The tank is 34" long and will hold roughly 1.5 pounds of nitrous oxide at 560 PSI and 80* F. The airframe is 1.5" (38mm) in diameter and utilizes a custom payload section of carbon fiber. The nosecone is 8" long. All the pieces are threaded and screw together for easy assembly / disassembly.

Filling of tank and ignition of motor is accomplished using a U/C Valve and standard electric match. Launch of vehicle is accomplished from appropriate tower or standard HPR rail.

Cost each is $500 plus shipping and handling. Includes nylon fill tube, one reload kit with nozzle, injector collar, and a 48" parachute.

A longer nitrous tank can be ordered for increased burn time. The injector can be changed and sized for different impulse configurations, call or email for pricing. Also available are premade fiberglass/carbon fibre fins and aluminum fins, call or email for pricing.

Reload kit is $45 which includes a PVC grain, graphite nozzle, phenolic collar, injector collar, and nylon fill tube.

This is one awesome piece of work. It's a snarly fast and wicked flash of composite and aluminum technology.
