Overview from Booklet:
In 1949 a rickety tower, 80 feet in height, was hauled off the prairie
in sections and reconstructed on the lawn of the Roswell Museum and
Art Center. Mrs. Esther Goddard split the costs with the city of Roswell,
and hosted a dedication tea. So began the Goddard Collection. Through
Esther's continuing generosity, the collection has evolved into an ever
more substantial record of her pioneering husband's work.
This project was undertaken to provide a listing of the original Goddard
materials which are now on hand. The sole criterion for inclusion is
that the objects wereproduced by or used by Dr. Goddard and his associates.
Some entries are rockets with hundreds of parts, while others are no
more than a scrap of paper. Of the approximately 1,100 included objects,
about 440 are actual products of the work, the remainder being tools,
supplies, and accessories.
An attempt was made to connect each artifact with a particular phase
of Dr. Goddard's work, and to make some determination as to its function
and relative significance. The list is therefore organized into a rough
chronology which follows Dr. Goddard's main line of rocket development.
Materials which, for various reasons, didn't fit in the chronology can
be found under subsequent headings.
It should be noted that there is a wide variety of Goddard-related material
at the museum which does not appear on this list. Some of this material
is unique and significant, e.g. period materials used in the Goddard
workshop reconstruction, memorabilia, replicas, awards, and archive
materials such as photographs, prints of Esther's films, and copies
of Dr. Goddard's patents and publications.
